In a quiet neighbourhood of Chiang Mai, immerse yourself in the traditional culture of northern Thailand by joining a Karen family for a half-day experience. Their members welcome you for a cooking class that reveals itself to be far more than just a culinary lesson. Between insights into spiritual traditions, instruction in ancestral techniques, and discovery of the extraordinary flora in their expansive garden, you'll leave with your eyes full of wonder.
A warm and spiritual welcome
Upon arrival, you'll be greeted warmly by the owner of this family home. He'll be delighted to begin the day by sharing the story of his family, who settled here five generations ago. They open the doors of their large property on the outskirts of Chiang Mai to visitors. You'll spend your time immersed in a setting that blends a lush garden with a traditional Thai-style house.
Throughout this half-day, you'll meet various family members. They live here like a small family village where solidarity flows across generations. You'll meet the father of the family and his children who will help you cook. You'll also get to know his parents, the elders of the household.
The welcome you receive is genuinely benevolent. You'll understand the true meaning of the phrase "Land of Smiles." A constant cheerfulness that dissolves everyday worries and immerses you in an experience rich with wisdom.
From the start and throughout the activity, the father will share his family's spiritual beliefs. The ancestral techniques you'll learn often connect to the spiritual traditions of the inhabitants or the history of their people. These fascinating anecdotes, combined with the hands-on nature of the activities, make this moment both instructive and deeply immersive.
Garden tour
Next, you'll explore the entire garden, which overflows with plants you'll use in culinary or medicinal forms.
You'll discover a multitude of plants whose names you may know but whose origins and original forms might surprise you:
- lemongrass for cooking and medicinal use,
- turmeric roots,
- a root used in tiger balm production,
- natural "viagra",
- And more.
All these plants lend the garden undeniable charm. Your senses will come alive: colourful leaves and flowers mingle with the pleasant aromas of the aromatic plants surrounding you.
The Thai cooking class
The Thai cooking class takes place in a wooden pavilion beneath which several outdoor tables are arranged. Some are used for drying products harvested by the family; others simply accommodate the meal you're about to prepare.
You'll join another family member who will explain, around a table laden with delicious ingredients, what you'll be cooking. They'll guide you through each step, teach you how to use the wok, and introduce you to essential ingredients that each play a crucial role in Thai cuisine.
A moment of connection, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
The cooking class has the advantage of filling a good portion of your half-day, as your instructor teaches you to prepare several dishes plus a dessert. Don't worry if you're vegetarian: you can replace the chicken with tofu.
Tasting your creations
After the cooking class, you'll have the pleasure of tasting your dishes. The flavours will awaken your palate, and you'll be proud of your preparations. Beautifully plated and served on banana leaf trays, the table will be colourful and appetising.
The meal will be accompanied by bottles of fresh water.
What you should know
- The activity is mostly outdoors, so bring a cap or hat and apply sunscreen.
- Don't hesitate to decline if the cooking instructor or father offers something you don't want. It would be a shame to end up with a dish that's too spicy for your taste.
- Consider bringing a pack of chewing gum or mints, as you might be surprised by the taste of fermented tea or natural toothpaste. Again, if it's not for you, feel free to politely refuse.
- You don't need to bring water bottles as these are provided on-site.
- Transport is not included in the programme; however, if you're a Sawa Discovery client, your personal driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the activity location.
