History

According to local legend, a sword was discovered at the site of the city, and it was thanks to this discovery that the town was named after it. Indeed, Krabi literally means "sword." Krabi received its city status in 1872 under King Chulalongkorn's reign. During this period, the population experienced significant growth.

The celebrated Railay Beach is accessed by boat and is characterized by its limestone cliffs in the translucent waters of the Andaman Sea. Tonsai, Ao Nang, and Phra Nang are equally stunning. On Phra Nang, stop at its somewhat unusual cave, which houses countless small phallic statuettes dedicated to fertility.

Visit Wat Tham Suea or Tiger Cave Temple

The Tiger Cave Temple is one of Krabi's must-see attractions, although it sits slightly outside the town centre. The cavern in question is perched atop a mountain. You'll need to climb 1,237 steps before reaching the summit. The climb is quite challenging, especially in the heat, so bring plenty of water. The final step is numbered 1,260. Once at the top, you'll be richly rewarded with a panoramic view overlooking Krabi and its surroundings.

Visit Khao Kanab Nam

These are two large limestone rocks located north of Krabi town. They're considered the city's main symbol. To get there, head to the Chao Fa pier. From there, you'll take a longtail boat for approximately 15 minutes. Once there, stairs will lead you to the summit where magnificent caves contain prehistoric paintings among stalactites and stalagmites.

Swim in Emerald Pool

This natural basin with its translucent emerald water is located about fifty kilometres from Krabi. It's known locally as Sra Morakot. There's an entrance fee: around 200 baht per adult and 100 baht for children. Visitors have access from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's best to arrive early as this spot is popular with both tourists and locals.

Taste Local Gastronomy

For those in Thailand for a culinary journey, don't miss Krabi's local specialities. Generally, Krabi's cuisine is known for being quite spicy and peppery. Order local pad Thai or satay meat skewers. Don't forget Khao Pat, Thailand's typical fried rice dish.

Krabi province is subject to a hot tropical climate almost year-round. As a result, local temperatures are generally high.

When Should You Visit Krabi?

To enjoy favourable weather conditions, it's advisable to plan your visit between November and April. During these months, the atmosphere is cooler. From June to November, the region experiences heavy rainfall, so it's best to avoid this period.

How to Get There?

Getting to this city is easy as it's very well connected.

By Air

This is the fastest and most convenient way to reach Krabi. The local airport is located about ten kilometres south of the town centre. Daily flights depart from Bangkok if you're starting from the capital. When you arrive at Krabi airport terminal, you can take an air-conditioned bus to the town centre. The fare is approximately 90 baht per person. There are also songthaews, the famous Thai pick-up taxis, which connect the airport to Krabi for about 50 baht.

By Bus

From the country's capital (Bangkok), go to the southern bus station, namely Sai Tai Taling Chan or "Southern Bus Terminal." This journey takes quite a while as you'll need to account for approximately 12 hours of driving. The arrival point is the Talat Kao bus station, located about 5 kilometres north of Krabi town.

By Train

Krabi town has no railway station, but the nearest one is in Surat Thani. From there, you'll need to take a bus to reach Krabi.

How to Get Around?

For shopping or getting around, the tuk-tuk remains the most practical option. In Krabi, there are also songthaews that serve the town and its outskirts.
