Phatthalung is a Thai city that remains relatively unknown to travelers and is therefore largely spared from mass tourism. Located in the far south of the country, on the western shore of Songkhla Lake, Phatthalung is considered the birthplace of Nang Talung, shadow theatre and the Nora dance puppet tradition. Despite its modest tourism profile, travelers often overlook that Phatthalung brims with sites to explore. The city is home to Wat Tham Khuha Sawan temple, the Thale Noi natural park, the sprawling Ratchaprapa Dam lake, Khao Ok Thalu mountain, and much more. History

Phatthalung was known as Mardelong (Jawi: مردلوڠ) in Malay, likely a name influenced by Malay-Muslim religion. Historically, it was closely linked to Songkhla Province. During the 7th century, in the Srivijaya era, the Phatthalung community was influenced by Indian culture through Mahayana Buddhism. Under the reign of King Ramathibodi I (U Thong) of Ayutthaya, Phatthalung became one of the 12 royal cities in the region.

A Brief Escape to Wat Tham Khuha Sawan Temple (วัด คูหาสวรรค์)

Wat Tham Khuha Sawan ranks among the ancient monuments of Phatthalung city. This magnificent temple spans two rock formations, accompanied by several caves offering panoramic views.

This site was used for religious ceremonies between the 8th and 10th centuries. Visiting this temple immerses you in the heart of Phatthalung's history.

To access the temple, you enter from the north, first passing through a limestone outcrop topped with a bell-shaped stupa. Then, you climb a grand moss-covered staircase leading directly to Khao Ok Thalu mountain, standing 250 meters high. You may even encounter one of the forest monks for a meditation session. It's also a pleasant spot for bat enthusiasts.

Thale Noi, a Complete Natural Park

Thale Noi is Thailand's largest aquatic bird sanctuary. Numerous aquatic plants and an environment rich in natural resources explain the high concentration of water birds in the region. Here you'll find teals, gulls, gallinules, coots and snipes that migrate each winter. In fact, 180 bird species have been recorded in the area. Thale Noi is considered Thailand's first non-hunting zone and one of the country's most important wetland ecosystems. To visit the park, you must arrive by boat.

Just 2 km from the park lies a magnificent cave containing stalactites and stalagmites called Tham Matcha Pla Won. It is home to giant Asian toads and centipedes. Moreover, this is also an opportunity to catch a glimpse of Pha Phueng, a limestone cliff located approximately 300 meters from the park. Each year, from February to March, giant bees come to build hundreds of hives here.

From Nature to Craftsmanship

Hiking through the mountainous areas of Phatthalung allows you to visit natural sites. You can discover the great waterfalls, including Mom Chui and Phraiwan. It's also pleasant to climb to the summit of Khao Ok Thalu, known as the symbol of Phatthalung Province. Along the same route, you can enjoy a visit to Khao Pu-Khao Ya national park. This is regarded as Thailand's 42nd national park, where the forest remains as lush and humid as ever. It is particularly renowned for its wildlife diversity, with approximately 132 animal species, of which 60 are mammals.

For local craft enthusiasts, a center dedicated specifically to craftsmanship is open for visits. Here you'll find specialists in coconut shell crafts, creating products such as bags, decorative items, bracelets, necklaces and more. You can also discover the Bang Kaeo center, specializing in producing puppets for shadow theatre. Many historical figurines are on display.

Exploring Ratchaprapa Dam Lake

With its breathtaking beauty and serene purity, the Ratchaprapa Dam lake is worthy of a sanctuary. It's rare to encounter other tourists, affording you the privilege of discovering its beauty in complete tranquility. As you circle the lake, you'll see a magnificent floating village nearby, followed by sugarloaf-shaped hills that provide a sumptuous backdrop to the surroundings. This lake is known as a haven for aquatic birds and primates.

Climate

Phatthalung city benefits from a tropical climate. During the rainy season, rainfall is very significant, with 1923 mm annually. Be aware that the dry season in this city is brief. The average temperature year-round is 27.5°C. The best times to visit are between January and March.
