4 major successes of Thai cinema to watch or rewatch

Jun 18 2024

If you know absolutely nothing about Thai cinema, don't worry; that's normal. Thai cinematography is one of the least known in the world, deeply rooted in local cultures, and only truly developed from the 1990s onwards. What makes it successful? Films ranging from historical dramas, action-packed adventures, horror thrillers, and comedies (and sometimes blending several genres in one). To introduce you to this cinematic universe, here are four of the biggest successes in Thai cinema.

The Legend of Suriyothai

Directed by Chatrichalerm Yukol, "The Legend of Suriyothai" is a historical film depicting how Queen Suriyothai fought alongside her husband, King Mahachakrapat, to save the kingdom of Ayutthaya from the invading Burmese under King Tabinshwehti. It was the first big-budget film in Thailand and still holds the record for the largest budget in Thai cinema history. Another milestone: it was the first Thai film to depict royalty, subsidized by Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara, and achieved unprecedented success upon its release in 2001, overshadowing even major American productions of the time.

The King Naresuan Saga

History enthusiasts shouldn't miss the "King Naresuan Saga," also directed by Chatrichalern Yukol. This biographical series, spanning six installments (to date), offers a magnificent portrayal of the roots of the Kingdom of Siam through the life of King Naresuan the Great. Starting in 1564 during the siege of Pitsanulok by the Burmese, the saga begins with Naresuan's father's defeat and subsequent submission of his two sons to the Burmese king. Like "The Legend of Suriyothai," this saga is among the highest-budget Thai films, meticulously recounting historical events: The hostage of Hongsawadee; Restoration of Sovereignty; Naval Battle; The War of Bayinnaung; The Battle of the Elephants; The End of Hong Sa

Pee Mak

If Thais enjoy horror, comedy, and romance films, "Pee Mak" blends all these genres! The film became an instant hit upon its 2013 release, quickly becoming the 3rd highest-grossing film in Thai cinema history (after "The Legend of Suriyothai" and the "King Naresuan Saga"). Directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun, it's an adaptation of the Mae Nak Phra Khanong legend. The story centers on a couple, Mak and Nak, who are separated when Mak, a soldier, leaves his pregnant wife to join the war effort. Upon his return, rumors abound that his wife and child have died, yet strange occurrences suggest otherwise. Prepare to be surprised by this unexpected and delightfully offbeat film genre!

Shutter (2004)

As mentioned, Thai cinema particularly excels in horror. "Shutter" is a prime example. Directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom, this Thai horror film released in 2004 garnered acclaim, winning awards such as Best Film at the Bangkok International Film Festival 2004 and Best Asian Film at the Fantasia International Film Festival 2005. Intrigued? Wait until you hear the synopsis: Tan and Jane, returning from a night out, accidentally hit a young woman. They flee in panic, leaving her body behind. Soon after, they encounter strange phenomena—apparitions in photographs, nightmares, and the deaths of close friends. Is it the vengeful ghost of the forgotten woman? That's what they'll try to uncover!
