7 fruits you must try in Thailand

Jun 18 2024

Banana, coconut, watermelon—we all know these fruits! And even though we never tire of them, it's always pleasant to taste new exotic flavors. Lucky for you, we've prepared a list of fruits you absolutely must try when traveling to Thailand. Calling all fruit enthusiasts and fresh fruit lovers, this vitamin-packed article is for you!

1. Durian

Known as the "king of fruits" in Thailand! It's characterized by its size (it can weigh up to 4 kg) and its shell, which is shaped like a spiky husk. Thai people love it, but travelers often find its strong smell off-putting. Indeed, this peculiar fruit is famous for its incredibly unique scent, which has led to it being banned in many public places (like planes, hotels, and public transport)! So, are you brave enough to taste it?

2. Dragon Fruit

From an epiphytic cactus, dragon fruit is easily recognizable. Outside, its skin is magenta pink with scales. Inside, it offers white flesh speckled with black seeds to be enjoyed with a spoon! Unlike durian, it has subtle flavors, sometimes with hints of vanilla.

3. Rambutan

With its spiky appearance resembling sea urchins, rambutan may seem strange. But once opened, this small fruit, originally from Malaysia, proves to be deliciously indulgent. Its white flesh around a seed offers a sweet and mild flavor. Don't be surprised if it reminds you of lychee—it's from the same family!

4. Mangosteen

After the king of fruits (durian), here comes the queen of fruits: mangosteen. This round fruit with a purple color earned its nickname from Queen Victoria, who allegedly offered a reward to anyone who could bring her these fruits to England. Locals cherish it for its refreshing qualities. Divided into segments, its flesh is sweet, tangy, and juicy.

5. Jackfruit

It's the largest fruit found in Thailand and even in the world. Some specimens weigh up to 40 kilograms, showing how impressive they are! Similar to durian, it's sold by weight ('Kheed' per 100 grams). Its yellow flesh is fibrous, with a gentle fragrance reminiscent of pineapple and mango. It can be eaten raw or cooked, and it is used in both savory and sweet dishes.

6. Longan

Here's another cousin of Lychee! Smaller than rambutan and lychee, longan is even sweeter and more fragrant! It comes in clusters of about thirty round fruits with smooth skins that turn brownish-orange when ripe.

7. Rose Apple or Water Apple

This peculiar fruit looks like a pear and has the appearance of a bell pepper. Green or red with a shiny skin, the rose apple is perfect for cooling off and rehydrating. Rich in water and sugar, its flesh is crisp, pleasing our taste buds!
