The city of Sen Monorom is the capital of Mondulkiri province, Cambodia's largest province. Though not a mainstream tourist destination, this city holds particular appeal for its natural resources. It boasts lush forests, rolling grasslands, hill tribes, waterfalls, and winding dirt roads. Nature lovers will find genuine adventure here.

Geography

Sen Monorom lies in northeastern Cambodia, 370 km from Phnom Penh, close to the Vietnamese border.

Sen Monorom Today

Beneath a rustic charm, Sen Monorom features a main street lined with restaurants, shops, and remarkable lakes. Most buildings here are wooden houses constructed in a traditional architectural style representative of ancient Cambodian design.

Sen Monorom is among Cambodia's least densely populated regions, with only 4 inhabitants/km². In 2009, its population was estimated at 7,500. Many ethnic groups, particularly the Bunong, live in this part of Cambodia. The Bunong have occupied the region for over 2,000 years. They are indigenous peoples known for their warmth and friendliness.

The Sen Monorom region is a perfect destination to savour Khmer cuisine, such as Lok Lak beef. The city has many excellent Khmer restaurants. Some establishments also attempt European gastronomy, greeting arriving visitors with English-language menus.

The areas surrounding this city are exceptionally rich in biodiversity. They are renowned for their dense forests, rolling hills, and picturesque waterfalls. Two lakes sit at the heart of the town. It is often nicknamed "the Switzerland of Cambodia." All of this constitutes a true haven and sanctuary for remarkably diverse wildlife. More than 70% of Cambodia's captive elephants are found in the Mondulkiri region. For this reason, several international NGOs operate here to protect these forest giants.

The most common tourist activity in this region is specialized trekking deep into the jungle. Whether on elephant back or on foot, this activity allows you to discover minority ethnic villages, the elephant valley, and Mondulkiri's biodiversity.

Bunong Villages

Accompanied by the village chief, a village representative, or a travel guide, tourists are always welcome among these indigenous peoples. During your visit, you may stay for a day or two to learn about the traditions, lifestyle, and culture of the Bunong people.

Note, however, that these communities now dress much like we do!

Bousra Waterfalls

Located just 30 km northeast of the city, the Bousra waterfalls are impressive. They are indeed two magnificent waterfalls sculpted by nature, with the first dropping over 30 meters and the second plunging over 40 meters. During the hottest periods in the region, these year-round cascades have become sanctuaries for swimming enthusiasts.

Elephant Valley Project

The Elephant Valley Project is a protected forest area home to wild elephants. The site is supported by a local charity called ELIE. This organization contributes to the care of elephants as they readapt to their natural habitat. Across more than 16,000 hectares, over 250 wild elephants roam and live freely. During your visit, you can volunteer for a few hours and participate in elephant care.
