Local Experience

A Thai herbal medicine school-inn southwest of Chiang Mai, run by Homprang Chaleekanha and state-accredited. Treatments, herbal baths and communal dining.

The Baanhom Samunphrai is a Thai herbal medicine school-inn located approximately 9 km southwest of central Chiang Mai. Far removed from hotels and commercial areas, this address offers traditional treatments, herbal baths sourced from its garden, and shared vegan meals in a rural setting run by a recognized figure in oriental medicine.

Why stay here

Baanhom Samunphrai is neither a hotel spa nor a conventional massage school. It is an immersive retreat rooted in family expertise, directed by Homprang Chaleekanha, a former midwife turned herbal medicine practitioner. She inherited this knowledge orally from her grandmother, a healer in a northern village at the borders of Burma, where conventional medicine had not yet taken hold.

Homprang is among the first healers accredited and certified by the Thai state. The training certificate issued on-site is validated by the Thai Ministry of Education — a rare credential in a sector dominated by informal practice.

The establishment welcomes both students of traditional medicine, English-speaking practitioners seeking advanced training, and travelers simply curious about this tradition. There is no rigid separation: all share meals, treatments, and rituals together.

The atmosphere

The setting is rural and secluded, with no tourist amenities nearby. The buildings are wooden, treatments take place in pavilions open to the garden, and the day unfolds around therapy sessions and communal meals. The atmosphere is quiet, structured by the founder's presence and the unhurried rhythm inherent to healing spaces.

The medicinal plant garden is cultivated on-site: it supplies the herbs used in baths, poultices, and infusions. Guests can explore it and learn to identify the species.

Treatments, meals and ceremony

Treatments

Three massage options are available:

  • Traditional full-body massage — 120-minute session
  • Foot massage — 60 minutes
  • Therapeutic massage targeting specific areas — 60 minutes

Treatments are complemented by an herbal bath with fresh garden herbs: ginger, tamarind, camphor, lemon, eucalyptus. Compositions vary according to individual needs (calming, healing, decongestant) and the carrier oil is chosen for optimal absorption, sesame oil being frequently favored.

The invocation ceremony

Before each treatment, Homprang opens the session with an invocation of Shivaga Komarapaj, regarded as the father of oriental medicine and physician to the Buddha. This ritual, accompanied by mantras, places the therapeutic gesture within its original spiritual context.

Meals

Vegan meals are shared around a large wooden table with other guests and staff members. This is a central moment in the life of the place, where conversations naturally unfold between students, wellness seekers, and travelers.

Location and access

The inn is located approximately 9 km southwest of central Chiang Mai. From the city center, allow about twenty minutes by tuk-tuk or red songthaew. Note the exact address before departure: the neighborhood is residential and drivers may not be familiar with the establishment. Staff speak limited English, so booking through your travel agency is advisable.

When to visit

Chiang Mai experiences a tropical climate with three distinct seasons. The period from November to February remains the most pleasant: mild temperatures, low humidity, clear skies. The rainy season (June to October) is best avoided for this type of outdoor retreat, and the burning season (March-April) significantly degrades air quality throughout the region.
