Chai Lai Orchid - Guide Thailand - Sawa discovery

Chai Lai Orchid

In northern Thailand, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, lies an oasis of rest. Located in Chiang Mai province, Chai Lai Orchid is a haven for nature enthusiasts. Get ready to immerse yourself in an elephant sanctuary and spend your nights under the stars at this friendly eco-lodge.

Staying at Chai Lai Orchid

Chai Lai Orchid is situated about 40 km southwest of Chiang Mai city, in the midst of mountains that are home to the indigenous Pga Knyau people (also known as Karen). The resort stretches along the slope of a hill overlooking the Mae Wang River. To get there, you cross a suspension bridge. Once on site, you’ll discover a hidden sanctuary designed for reconnecting with nature, rejuvenating, and enjoying a variety of outdoor activities. Chai Lai Orchid has been awarded the Village Monde label, promoting a network of sustainable tourism in unexplored destinations.

Support a committed eco-lodge

Firstly, it's important to know that Chai Lai Orchid aims to provide a better life for elephants, who are often victims of abusive practices in Thailand. To achieve this mission, the resort collaborates with locals by renting the animals from their owners rather than buying them. Since its inception, the sanctuary has rescued around fifteen abused elephants.

It is also a socially engaged project against the trafficking of girls. All proceeds are donated to the organization Daughters Rising, which supports the empowerment of marginalized women through education and training programs. In other words, by staying at Chai Lai Orchid, you contribute to human rights protection and animal rescue.

Rejuvenate close to nature

Forget the stress of the cities; Chai Lai Orchid is a peaceful place with a natural and relaxed atmosphere. Relax in the open-air café setting, letting the sound of water and crickets soothe you. Elephants parade before your eyes; they dive into the river and emerge on the opposite bank before disappearing into the dense jungle foliage. You can ask their keeper, locally known as a Mahout, to stop them for a few photos.

Sleep in glamping-style cottages

On a three-acre estate, Chai Lai Orchid features 20 bungalows for visitors wishing to stay a few days. These are glamping-style shelters, minimalistic but carefully furnished to ensure maximum comfort. Topped with thatched roofs, the small bamboo huts come with a cozy double bed and practical furniture.

Electricity is provided, but for Wi-Fi access, you will need to go to the common areas. While there is no air conditioning, fans are available to help you stay cool. Note that, as there is no insulation, be sure to bring something warm for the night.

Additionally, the bungalows have sunny terraces and outdoor bathrooms. Depending on their location, they offer views of the valley, mountains, or the Mae Wang River.

Dine in the company of Elephants

During your stay at Chai Lai Orchid, you will be rewarded with a healthy and flavorful dining experience. The chefs will serve you typical regional dishes made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. You can enjoy your meal while watching the ballet of elephants and the picturesque landscape of the valley. Breakfasts at Chai Lai Orchid are special occasions. Your meal will be delivered to your terrace by an elephant and Mahout.

In winter, Thai-style barbecues are organized around a campfire, with movie screenings as an extra. Across the river, a jazz bar offers additional food and drink options, along with a relaxed musical atmosphere in the evening.

What to see and do around Chai Lai Orchid

While it’s easy to become attached to the peaceful and natural ambiance of the sanctuary, don’t miss out on exploring the surroundings. You are in an adventure-rich land where a variety of activities are available to rejuvenate you and create unforgettable memories. Hiking trails wind nearby, some leading to hidden waterfalls. Mountain biking routes are available for those who prefer two-wheeled escapades. You can also book an elephant ride.

During your adventures, engage with members of the mountain tribes to learn about their history and way of life. For thrill-seekers, bamboo rafting spots and zip-lining courses are on the agenda.
