The story of Chanalai began in 1987 when Mr. Chanalai Rompho, a visionary Thai entrepreneur, decided to bring his dream of creating quality hotels in Phuket—a place he deeply loves—to life. His first act was acquiring a plot of land on Kata Beach, where he built the group's very first property, the Chanalai Garden Resort. He then developed three other gems along the same beach: Chanalai Romantica Resort, Chanalai Hillside Resort, and Chanalai Flora Resort.

The name "Chanalai" originates from Thai, literally meaning "the water flowing from the sky."
