Bamboo rafting in Chiang Mai - Guide Thailand - Sawa discovery

Bamboo rafting in Chiang Mai

Travelers and explorers in Thailand have found this traditional means of transportation to be a fun and exciting leisure activity. You traverse watercourses aboard a bamboo raft with oars made of the same material. It's a thrilling activity. You get an adrenaline rush over some moderate rapids and enjoy idyllic landscapes on the calm waters of Chiang Mai. Your makeshift craft floats just above the water and moves with the current. The experience is a rudimentary yet original way to discover the magnificent landscapes of the Chiang Mai region.

Must-visit sites

Mae Wang River

Shallow and less turbulent waters, both upstream and downstream of this watercourse, are perfect for bamboo rafting. What awaits you is a tranquil cruise along the river with views of Mae Wang Park, its elephants, and picturesque villages. The crossing takes an average of 30 minutes.

Getting there is quite easy. From Chiang Mai International Airport, buses transport you to the city named after the river. Near the bus stop is the Mae Wang Market, a gourmet stop before reaching the bamboo raft pier at the top of the hill.

Mae Tang River

This is the most exotic option, recommended for adventure enthusiasts and tropical hikers. Tranquil water crossings of the watercourse are preceded by jungle trekking.

From downtown Chiang Mai, you have plenty of options to reach rafting sites. Rent the services of red taxi trucks to take you to the bamboo raft pier. These carriers can also wait for your return at a rallying point and then take you back to downtown.

Traveling by motorcycle or private car is also possible if you know the way. Locals prefer to travel by bus. It's the most economical option when traveling with family or friends.

The best time for bamboo rafting in Chiang Mai

Between November and March to avoid the rainy season. Outside of these periods, strong currents due to heavy rainfall make the rivers of Chiang Mai impracticable and dangerous.

Good to know before engaging in this activity

For novices, it's better to entrust raft steering to the guide and simply be a passenger. Rest assured, this does not detract from the thrilling moments of the journey. And don't panic if your raft takes on water occasionally. This craft is not 100% waterproof but remains functional for the crossing.

As a precaution, still wear a life jacket and swimwear. Keep a waterproof bag handy to store your electronic items and important documents, a water bottle, a small snack, waterproof shoes, and spare clothes. Don't forget to apply sunscreen. Sun exposure can bother sensitive skin.

The raft has a capacity of 3 to 4 people. There's nothing stopping you from having this experience with family or friends. The activity is recommended for individuals who can swim. One can never be too careful. However, note that the raft guide and driver are also skilled and experienced swimmers.
