Phu Chong–Na Yoi National Park

Embark on a wilderness adventure at Phu Chong Na Yoi National Park! Nestled at the junction point of the Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia borders, this lesser-known destination offers delightful surprises. Spoiler alert: waterfalls and exceptional biodiversity await!

History

During periods of conflict, border camps were established in the remote forests of Ubon Ratchathani province in northeastern Thailand to accommodate Cambodian refugees. In 1987, the area was converted into a protected reserve to preserve its ecosystems. Due to its remote location, Phu Chong Na Yoi National Park remains relatively unexplored, making it one of the best-preserved regions in the country.

Discovering Phu Chong Na Yoi National Park

Bordering the borders of three nations, Phu Chong Na Yoi National Park is known as the "Emerald Triangle." It spans an adventurous land of 686 km2, adorned with waterfalls, lush forests, and unique geological formations.

Marvel at stunning waterfalls

Nestled deep within the virgin forest, waterfalls are the park's unmistakable gems. Namtok Huai Luang waterfall steals the show, cascading 40 meters down a sheer cliff. A trail leads to its summit, offering different perspectives of the landscape. Below the waterfall, a panoramic pool invites swimming, while the adjacent small beach provides a picturesque spot to relax.

A few kilometers south of Namtok Huai Luang, another waterfall, fed by the Lam Dom Noi stream, forms a serene natural basin known as Namtok Koeng Mae Phong.

Don’t miss exploring the rapids of Kaeng Sila Thip. Turbulent waters rush over a rocky terrace, carving out a series of cavities on the stone surface known as "Kumphalak" by locals, each with varying sizes and depths.

Explore hiking trails for panoramic views

Start from the main entrance and follow the trail to Pha Pheung Cliff. Photography enthusiasts will find an exceptional spot here to capture the natural beauty of the Emerald Triangle and its surroundings.

Another recommended viewpoint in Phu Chong Na Yoi National Park is Phu Hin Drang sandstone mountain, offering views of the vast, lush forest and the Mekong Basin on the horizon. Visit early in the in the morning for sunrise views. In winter, mist often blankets the summit, creating a mystical atmosphere.

Phu Hin Drang also stands out for its unique geological formations, including stalagmite terraces, fissures, grooves, and concave rock basins. Along the trail to the summit, you’ll encounter a beautiful collection of orchids and wildflowers.

Finally, don’t miss the Phlan Kong Kwian rock terrace. Once sought-after shelters for travelers, these natural shelters now showcase a variety of wild plants and flowers.

Of course, a national park wouldn’t be complete without a diverse range of wildlife. While Phu Chong Na Yoi is renowned for its landscapes, expect encounters with various mammals, reptiles, vibrant-colored birds, and a plethora of insects during your visit.
