Baan Talae Nok
Baan Talae Nok
Stay with locals in a Muslim fishing village on the Andaman coast, an award-winning community ecotourism project from 2008.
Baan Talae Nok means "distant sea village." This hamlet of Muslim fishermen, nestled on the Andaman coast in Ranong Province, offers homestay accommodation on a rotating basis within the community. A modest formula, born from an ecotourism initiative launched after the 2004 tsunami and awarded the Kinnaree Prize for tourism in Thailand in 2008.
Why stay at Baan Talae Nok
The village has a singular history. Ancestors settled here about a century ago, drawn by tin deposits. Once these deposits were exhausted, residents turned to fishing, now the main local activity. The 2004 tsunami struck the community hard; to aid reconstruction, an ecotourism club dedicated to local heritage was founded with support from Andaman Discoveries. Visitors are housed in rotation with families, which ensures villagers a stable supplementary income and allows tourism benefits to be distributed equitably.
This commitment was recognized in 2008 with the Kinnaree Prize in Thailand's tourism sector. You are staying, therefore, in a mature, structured community project, not in an improvised arrangement.
Atmosphere and village life
The community is Muslim. Your stay requires a respectful attitude toward the inhabitants, their faith and way of life: modest dress, no alcohol, respect for prayer times. In return, the welcome is genuine and immersion is real. You are treated as a family member throughout your stay.
Days follow the rhythm of the village. Upon waking, breakfast consists of local coffee and coconut pancakes. The day is spent on shared activities with villagers, with possible rest periods in hammocks in the shade. Evening meals, prepared together with your host family, are an opportunity to exchange views on local culture and ancestral history. You can try on traditional Thai and Muslim clothing if you wish.
Accommodation and services
Accommodation rotates throughout the community. Depending on the family hosting you, you may stay in a solid house with a young couple or in a traditional wooden shelter with a fisherman. Standards therefore vary from house to house, but each family provides:
- a private bedroom,
- a mattress,
- a mosquito net.
Comfort remains simple: no systematic air conditioning, often shared bathroom facilities, limited electricity. This is not a hotel — it is a stay with locals, and that is precisely what makes it valuable.
What to do
Activities are organized around the village's traditional skills and natural environment.
Village activities
- Artisanal soap making,
- Palm weaving,
- Introduction to batik with village women,
- Cashew nut processing, a moment conducive to conversation,
- Traditional Thai cooking with your host family.
Sea and forest excursions
Longtail boat trips explore the surrounding mangroves (monkeys, monitor lizards, birds) and reach the uninhabited island of Ko Kam for swimming and snorkeling. Dolphins are regularly spotted along this stretch of coast. On land, guided treks through the tropical forest offer chances to encounter great hornbills, kingfishers and giant squirrels. Fishing days with villagers (fish, crabs, squid) are also possible.
Location and access
Baan Talae Nok is located in the southern part of Ranong Province, on the Andaman coast, near the small town of Kuraburi. The most convenient airport is Phuket. From there, buses serve Kuraburi or Ranong. Once you arrive, a transfer from the meeting point to the village is organized by the community. Allow a full day of travel from Phuket if you connect various transport legs.
Combining with your Thailand itinerary
Baan Talae Nok fits well into a southern Thailand route blending community immersion with more conventional stops. A few options to extend your stay:
- Koh Jum Delight Beach for a peaceful beach stopover,
- Baan Hin Sai Resort on the east coast,
- 7Q Pathong for an urban transition in Phuket,
- Lilu Hotel for a return to hotel comfort.
