From the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand, discover the best diving spots to explore during a Thailand getaway. Ready to take the plunge?

1. Koh Tao

Thailand's Best Diving Spots

Renowned for its numerous diving sites, Koh Tao is the smallest island in the Gulf of Thailand. With crystal-clear waters and remarkably diverse marine fauna and flora, it's an island virtually dedicated to diving. Indeed, it's famous for its many dive schools and training courses, making it an ideal place to learn to dive. As for the more experienced, they won't be disappointed either! Between the anemone-covered pinnacles at Chumphon Pinnacle, the rocky peaks at South West Rock, and the military ship wreck (the HTMS Sattakut) at 29 meters depth, there's plenty to explore!

In any case, when you dive at Koh Tao, you'll observe numerous fish species (giant groupers, barracudas, batfish, jacks, triggerfish, remoras, clownfish…), colorful corals, nudibranchs, and if you're lucky, whale sharks!

2. Sail Rock

Thailand's Best Diving Spots

Accessible from Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, or Koh Samui, Sail Rock is one of the most beautiful diving spots in the Gulf of Thailand. And its topography plays a major role. Comprised of a hollow pinnacle whose emerged portion rises approximately 7 meters above sea level, Sail Rock descends to nearly 30 meters depth. Divers can then explore this massive vertical chimney. But what gives Sail Rock its reputation is its abundant schools of fish. Barracudas, jacks, batfish, fusiliers… The fish schools are so impressive they form clouds underwater…

Beyond that, you'll encounter groupers, angelfish, triggerfish, moray eels, shrimp, sea slugs, and numerous varieties of soft and hard corals. And if luck is on your side, you might cross paths with a whale shark…

3. The Similan Islands

Thailand's Best Diving Spots

The Similan archipelago is a group of islands located in the Andaman Sea. Access is available from Phuket or Khao Lak. It's a nature reserve among the world's most renowned diving destinations. And for good reason—these wild islands are virtually uninhabited, which helps preserve marine fauna and flora. As such, the variety of species thriving here is rich and diverse. You can spot sea turtles, leopard sharks, manta rays, reef sharks, whale sharks, barracudas, jacks, and much more. Not to mention the 200 species of soft corals…

Experienced divers will find satisfaction at sites like Elephant Head, Christmas Point, or on the local wrecks (Boosung, Premchai, and MV Sea Chart). For sites more accessible to beginners, consider Anita's Reef, West of Eden, Turtle Rock, or Breakfast Bend… In any case, to make the most of it, the ideal option is to arrange a multi-day diving cruise.

4. The Surin Islands

Thailand's Best Diving Spots

Located north of the Similan Islands in the Andaman Sea, the Surin Islands form an isolated and protected archipelago. Divers venture there particularly to explore the Richelieu Rock site, one of the most spectacular diving locations in the world… This solitary rock in the open sea is especially renowned for its high concentration (depending on season) of whale sharks. Among the other diving sites in the Surin Islands are Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, Koh Chi, Ao Phak Kat, Hin Kong, and Koh Torinla. Throughout the area, you can see manta rays, seahorses, reef sharks, sea turtles, barracudas, and countless others…
