Chiang Khan
On the banks of the Mekong, Chiang Khan welcomes you with century-old wooden houses, monks at dawn, and breathtaking sunrises over the mist.
The small town of Chiang Khan sits in Thailand's northeast and belongs to Loei Province. Positioned along the banks of the Mekong River, it faces Laos directly across the water. The town's charm lies in its tranquility and the traditional wooden houses scattered throughout. Yet on weekends, it fills with Thai nationals and travelers seeking refuge. Home to 10,000 residents, it delivers an authentic atmosphere reminiscent of provincial towns across Thailand.
History
Chiang Khan was once isolated from the Kingdom of Vientiane before its devastation by the Haw, a group of Chinese from Yunnan. After ravaging three villages—Chiang Khan, Vientiane, and Luang Prabang—they settled in Pak Hueang. They soon abandoned this strategically unfavorable location for Ban Tha Na Chan, near present-day Chiang Khan.
Later, during the reign of King Rama V the Great, the kingdom lost territory on the left bank of the Mekong River to French colonial powers. The Laotians subsequently invaded Thai territory and built the Chiang Khan that exists today.
Chiang Khan Today
The once-thriving trade route is now a favorite weekend destination for Thai travelers. Some come to admire sunsets over the riverfront, while others arrive for shopping. Many colonial-era traditional houses have been converted into souvenir shops, restaurants, and guesthouses as tourism has flourished. Today, the town continues to develop with the opening of new local establishments catering to visitors.
