A small, flat island in Thailand's Gulf, Koh Mak captivates with its hidden beaches, unhurried rhythm, and commitment to eco-responsibility, positioned between the better-known Koh Chang and Koh Kood.

Koh Mak is a small verdant island in Thailand's Gulf, situated in the eastern part of the country. Positioned between the more celebrated Koh Chang and Koh Kood, this tropical paradise remains unspoiled by mass tourism. Unlike its neighboring islands with their dramatic terrain, Koh Mak is entirely flat, and its beaches are absolutely breathtaking.

It is one of 52 islands within the Mu Ko Chang marine national park. Its beauty and tranquility are simply exceptional, whether for a romantic escape or a few days of pure respite.

History

During the reign of King Rama V, Chao Sua Seng, a Chinese affairs officer, established a coconut plantation on Koh Mak. He subsequently transferred ownership to Luang Prompakdii, the official responsible for Chinese affairs.

Khun Mae Mulee, the wife of Luang Propakdii, acquired the coconut plantation for 300 Chang—equivalent to 24,000 Baht. From that point onward, Koh Mak passed into the hands of the Taveteekul family's descendants, where it remains today.

The family enjoyed considerable respect in Prachatkiriket. Prospering, they expanded their operations by purchasing and processing mangrove wood. They were among the first merchants to successfully buy and ship mangrove timber to Bangkok.

In 1910, the entire family relocated to the coconut plantation, and their children began cultivating rubber on the island's virgin lands. As devoted Buddhists, the couple constructed a temple—though it was unfortunately abandoned after two years.

In 1974, the first tourist bungalows were built on Koh Mak's eastern coast at Ban Ao Nid.

By 1987, tourism had gained momentum, and resort complexes were established along several of the island's beaches.

Today

The coconut and rubber plantations remain Koh Mak's signature, thanks to the Tavateekul family's descendants. Most island residents work in agriculture.

Currently, Koh Mak is home to approximately three fishing villages, three diving schools, and 25 accommodation options.

Most hotels and restaurants are concentrated along Ao Kao beach. The island has earned a reputation for being considerably quieter than its neighbors. Tourists are fewer and less conspicuous, promising a peaceful stay where you can enjoy dream-like beaches in complete serenity.
