Just 170 km south of Bangkok, Cha Am unfolds 7 km of pine-fringed shoreline, a striking royal teak palace, and a wonderfully local Wednesday market. The calm, budget-friendly alternative to Hua Hin.

Located in Phetchaburi province, Cha Am is a coastal town celebrated for its serene setting and long beach stretching roughly 7 km. The town sits approximately 170 km south of Bangkok and about 20 km north of Hua Hin.

History

Cha Am's municipal foundation dates to 1897. Initially, the district was called Na Yang. It wasn't until 1914, following a royal visit from an Ayutthaya sovereign, that the town officially became known as Cha Am.

Today

Cha Am and its Beach

Tourists—both Thai and international—flock to Cha Am primarily for its spectacular beaches framed by pine trees and the leisurely atmosphere that pervades them. One activity stands out as essential: the "banana boat," an inflatable banana-shaped tube towed behind a jet ski. The waters are generally calm for swimming, especially at high tide, though jellyfish occasionally venture close to shore, so a little caution is wise.

This royal residence, constructed primarily of teak wood, was built in 1923 by Rama VI. Located roughly 9 km south of Cha Am, it was intended as a summer retreat for the king's stays in the region. An Italian architect designed the building, which showcases Victorian aesthetics. Its name references the site where Buddha delivered his first sermons. Today, the palace operates as a museum, displaying personal belongings of the monarch, along with photographs and paintings.
