Patong occupies the western side of Phuket island, facing the Andaman Sea. If you're seeking a peaceful setting, Patong isn't ideal: the Bangla Road alleys buzz late into the night and the main beach remains heavily crowded. Conversely, for those wanting an energetic stay with restaurants, shopping and nightlife within walking distance, the resort delivers.

A touch of history: the 2004 tsunami

On December 26, 2004, a tsunami triggered by an Indian Ocean earthquake struck Phuket's west coast. Patong was among the island's hardest-hit areas. The resort was rebuilt in the following years, and current tourist infrastructure largely dates from this recovery period. Evacuation signs and marked routes for tsunami alerts remain visible along the seafront.

What to see and do in Patong

Patong Beach

The main beach stretches approximately 4 km and remains the heart of the resort. Jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking and snorkeling are all available. For jet-ski rentals, here's practical advice: photograph the watercraft from every angle before departing, paying special attention to existing scratches. Disputes over alleged repairs are regularly reported.

Bangla Road, the evening pedestrian street

Bangla Road runs from the Jungceylon shopping center entrance and forms Patong's liveliest artery. The street becomes pedestrianized in the evening and concentrates beer bars, rooftop bars, clubs, pubs, live music stages and go-go bars. Side alleys, called soi, house more intimate venues often cheaper than those on the main avenue. This is the heart of Phuket's nightlife, best explored while keeping an eye on your belongings and agreeing on prices before ordering.

Jungceylon Shopping Center

Located at Bangla Road's entrance, Jungceylon houses clothing boutiques, restaurants, massage parlors, a bowling alley and a Shell Museum. It's also a useful landmark for escaping the heat or afternoon showers.

Banzaan Market

Banzaan Market sits just behind Jungceylon shopping center. Its name means "fresh market" in Hokkien, reflecting Phuket's Sino-Thai community influence. This covered market offers tropical fruits, flowers, fish and seafood, local vegetables and confectionery. Both the entrance and exit feature a vividly colored Chinese shrine worth a moment's appreciation.

Nearby beaches

• Paradise Beach: roughly 5 km east of Patong, accessible on foot along the coast (good fitness recommended), by boat, car or tuk-tuk. More secluded setting, fine sand and coconut palms.

• Freedom Beach: accessible only by long-tail boat from Patong's southern tip, about 10 minutes crossing. Quiet beach with minimal amenities.

• Kalim Beach: north of the bay, from Novotel Phuket Resort to Thavorn Beach village. Rocky shores, winding scenic road into the hills, several beachfront restaurants.

• Tri Trang Beach: 500 meters south of Patong, treeless, making it favored for sunbathing. Water sports activities available on-site.

Practical information

• The resort is easily walkable in its central section (beach, Bangla Road, Jungceylon, Banzaan).

• For travel to neighboring beaches, budget for transport: songthaews (red or yellow minivans) and tuk-tuks have no meters, so negotiate prices before boarding.

• Official yellow and red "TAXI-METER" taxis offer better value for longer journeys.

• Scooter rental is widely available and remains the most economical option for exploring the west coast. International motorcycle license required and helmets mandatory under local law.

• Jet-ski rental scams are common: photograph the vehicle before use.

When to visit Patong

The best season runs from November through March, with temperatures between 24 and 32°C and minimal rainfall. This is high tourist season: the resort is very crowded and accommodations require advance booking.

From April to May, heat intensifies (up to 36°C) and heavy rains begin appearing. The rainy season continues through October, with the Andaman Sea often rough on the west coast and red flags frequently raised at Patong Beach.

Getting there

Flying from Bangkok

Bangkok to Phuket covers roughly 862 km. Flight connections are frequent, with many daily rotations operated by Thai carriers. Phuket International Airport is located north of the island; allow approximately 45 minutes driving to Patong by taxi, shared minibus or airport bus.

By car or bus from Bangkok

The road journey is lengthy (over 12 hours by overnight bus), but allows you to traverse southern Thailand. Car rental is mainly worthwhile for subsequently exploring the region around Phuket, Krabi or Phang Nga.
