🧭 Off the beaten pathSea & Beach

Thailand's western façade: limestone peaks plunging into the sea, karst islands of Phang Nga, beaches from Krabi to Koh Lanta and diving at the Similans.

The Andaman Coast stretches along Thailand's western façade, facing the Indian Ocean. This 800-kilometer stretch of coastline offers spectacular landscapes with limestone peaks rising from the sea. From Railay to Koh Phi Phi, passing through Phang Nga Bay, this unique karst geology shapes the region's visual identity.

Phuket serves as the main gateway thanks to its international airport. The island receives direct flights from Europe and Asia. Phuket Town preserves a 19th-century Sino-Portuguese heritage, when tin trade attracted Chinese merchants and European traders.

Further north, Krabi and Phang Nga offer access to less urbanized landscapes. Muslim fishing villages, rubber plantations and Khao Sok National Park make up this authentic forested hinterland.

Geography and local culture

A diverse population

The Andaman Coast stands out for its cultural diversity. Islam is deeply present, a legacy of ancient Malay trading routes. Mosques punctuate the landscapes of coastal villages in Krabi, Trang and Satun.

The Moken and Moklen, sea nomads, still live on a few northern islands, notably around the Surin Islands. This cultural richness resonates in local gastronomy:

  • Massaman with mild Persian-influenced curry

  • Roti inherited from Indian cuisines

  • Fish grilled in salt at beachside warungs

  • Fresh seafood at night markets

The evening markets of Phuket Town or Krabi Town are worth a visit to discover this authentic cuisine, far from hotel restaurants.

Tourism impact and recent history

The local economy has relied on tourism since the 1980s. But fishing, rubber and palm oil still structure the hinterland. The 2004 tsunami profoundly marked the region, particularly around Khao Lak where memorials recall this tragedy.

Today, Phuket's rapid urbanization contrasts with preserved areas. This is why we recommend combining practical logistics hubs with more secluded stays on secondary islands.
