Phu Ruea National Park

A mountain massif rising to 1,365 metres in Loei province, Phu Ruea National Park offers views over the Mekong, waterfalls and one of Thailand's coolest climates.
The Phu Ruea National Park protects a massif of the Phetchabun mountain range reaching 1,365 metres in Loei province, in northeastern Thailand. The mountain that gives the park its name owes its designation to its silhouette: its cliffs evoke the bow of a Chinese junk (ruea meaning "boat" in Thai). Across 121 km², the site combines sandstone ridges, fractured plateaus, waterfalls and one of the country's coolest climates — temperatures can drop below 0°C in winter.
Why Visit Phu Ruea National Park
Phu Ruea remains off the beaten path of northern Thailand's major tourist circuits. The park offers panoramic views of the Mekong and Hueang rivers from its summit, discreet yet varied wildlife, and rock formations sculpted by erosion. It is one of the few areas in Thailand where you can observe wild cherry blossoms and rhododendrons in flower — a landscape that stands apart from the country's typical tropical imagery. Visitor numbers remain moderate outside the winter season, making it an ideal stop for travellers seeking an accessible yet uncrowded national park.
History and Creation of the Park
Phu Ruea National Park opened to the public in 1979. Its name derives directly from the shape of the main mountain, whose cliffs resemble an inverted Chinese junk hull. The site is part of a collection of protected massifs within the Phetchabun range, which also includes Phu Luang (1,571 m), Phu Kradueng (1,316 m) and Phu Lom Lo (1,664 m), all situated within separate protected areas. The park spans administratively across Phu Ruea and Tha Li districts.
What to See and Do
The Summit of Phu Ruea
The highest point lies approximately 3 km from the visitor centre. You can drive to a parking area and complete the journey on foot, or take a park shuttle. On foot, the trail crosses high-altitude grasslands where wild orchids grow. At the summit stands the Phra Phuttha Nawa Banphot statue, depicting the Buddha in Maravijaya pose (calling the earth to witness). From this vantage point, views extend over the Mekong and Hueang rivers, which mark the border with Laos.
Pha Loan Noi Mountain
Located approximately 3 km from park headquarters, this secondary viewpoint commands views of three neighbouring massifs: Phu Luang, Phu Pha Sat and Phu Khrang.
Hin Tao and Lan Hin Phan Khan Mak
Hin Tao is a rocky pinnacle detached from the massif, its silhouette resembling a turtle, shaped by erosion. Nearby, the Lan Hin Phan Khan Mak plateau features a rock slab crossed by fissures where wildflowers bloom in spring.
Waterfalls
Two waterfalls mark the main trail leading to the summit: Hua Phai cascade, approximately 3 metres high and the most visited, and Pha Sam Thong cascade, more secluded.
Fauna and Flora
Wildlife includes sun bears, Asian dholes (critically endangered species), and several cervids: Indian muntjac, barking deer and sambar. Birdlife comprises around thirty recorded species including wild jungle fowl, green peafowl, guava bulbul, greater coucal (up to 48 cm), Asian barred owlet, plain prinia, red-breasted barbet and brown-throated sunbird. Flora is distinguished by multicoloured orchids, cherry trees, tulips and pink rhododendrons.
Practical Information
The park is open year-round, from morning to early evening. An entrance fee applies to foreign visitors (higher rate than Thai residents), with half price for children. Parking is available at the entrance. Bring water, hiking shoes and, during the cool season, warm clothing: temperatures can drop below 0°C at night and sometimes during the day.
When to Visit
The period from December to February remains most suitable for enjoying Phu Ruea: clear skies, cherry blossom flowering and pronounced coolness that contrasts with the rest of the country. The park does experience heavy visitor numbers from Thai visitors around New Year; it's best to avoid this window if you seek tranquility. The rainy season (June to October) makes trails slippery but offers more generous waterfalls.
How to Get There
Park headquarters is located approximately 59 km from Loei, about one hour's drive, and 176 km from Phitsanulok. Road access is via Highway 203 to Phu Ruea district, where signs indicate the secondary road to the entrance. Without a vehicle, it's possible to reach Loei by bus, then take a regional bus heading towards Phitsanulok and request a stop at Phu Ruea district; from there, a songthaew or motorcycle taxi will take you to the park. Private transfer remains the most straightforward option if time is limited.
Nearby Attractions
The Loei region offers several worthwhile extensions:
Wat Pa Huay Lad, a forest temple close to the park;
Loei Castle, a highland wine estate — one of Thailand's rare wineries;
Phu Kradueng National Park, on a neighbouring plateau renowned for hiking.
To explore other northern temples, also consider Wat Phra That Cho Hae in Phrae or Wat Phumin in Nan.
