Nicknamed the "Kunming of Thailand," Suan Hin Pha Ngam reveals a labyrinth of limestone peaks in Loei Province, in Isan.

Nicknamed Kunming Mueang Thai, the "Kunming of Thailand," the rock park of Suan Hin Pha Ngam rises its limestone peaks above the village of Ban Pha Ngam, in Loei Province. Its name translates literally to "the beautiful rock park." The site remains largely unknown to international travelers, yet it offers one of the most singular geological landscapes in Isan.

Why Visit Suan Hin Pha Ngam

Three main reasons warrant a detour to this site:

  • A rare karst landscape in Thailand, comparable to the Stone Forest of Kunming in southwestern China.

  • Predominantly Thai visitors, making it an authentic destination far from saturated tourist circuits.

  • Mandatory guided visits led by a forest ranger, ensuring environmental preservation and a structured experience.

The site suits both hiking and shorter visits by agricultural tractor, making it accessible to different visitor profiles.

A Geological History of Over 200 Million Years

The park's formation dates back to a geological event some 210 to 230 million years ago. Part of the massif collapsed, allowing limestone peaks to emerge and later be sculpted by erosion. The result: a labyrinth of upright, fissured, and rounded rocks whose silhouette recalls that of the Stone Forest of Kunming, in China. This resemblance earned the site its local nickname "Kunming Mueang Thai."

The name Suan Hin Pha Ngam translates to "the beautiful rock park." The surrounding region remains primarily agricultural, with an economy challenged by soil erosion, which complicates the work of local farmers.

What to See and Do

The Trail Through the Limestone Peaks

The main route covers approximately 3 km. It winds between rock formations, passes through dense vegetation, and includes several notable points. The terrain is generally flat, except for a narrow passage about 1 meter wide through a tight gorge.

Waterfalls and the Viewpoint

Along the trail, two cascades merit a stop: the Suan Hom Falls and Suan Din Falls. The path culminates at the summit of a hill outfitted as an observation post, offering views across the entire rock park and surrounding countryside. From this vantage point, the limestone cliff evoking Kunming is clearly visible.

Hiking or Kubota Tractor

Two visiting modes coexist. Most Thai visitors opt for the Kubota tractor, which is faster and suited to families. Foreign travelers typically prefer hiking, which allows better appreciation of the site's details and vegetation.

Practical Information

  • Guided visits mandatory: no independent access; a forest ranger accompanies each group.

  • Group sizes: limited; sharing the visit with other travelers reduces cost per person.

  • Rates: moderate, payable on-site (guide and tractor option).

  • Languages: few guides speak English. Signage is primarily in Thai script; "Rock Garden" mentions are rare.

  • Recommended gear: closed-toe shoes, water, sun protection, and a hat.

When to Visit

The dry season, roughly November to March, remains the most comfortable period. Limestone trails become slippery during the rainy season (June to October), and certain gorge passages can be treacherous. Isan temperatures climb steeply in April-May: prefer an early morning visit if traveling in early summer.

How to Get There

Suan Hin Pha Ngam lies in Loei Province in northeastern Thailand, about 400 km from Bangkok. The site is attached to the village of Ban Pha Ngam, roughly 20 kilometers from Nong Hin. No public transport serves the park directly.

  • From central Loei: about 1 hour's drive.

  • From Nong Hin: about 20 minutes.

  • From Phu Kradueng National Park: approximately 1 hour's drive as well.

Since signage is primarily in Thai, the simplest solution is to rent a car with a driver or arrange a local taxi for the round trip.
