A unique temple in Nan, Wat Phumin houses 19th-century Tai Lue frescoes including the famous 'Whispering of Love' and architecture supported by two Nagas.

Wat Phumin is one of the most distinctive temples in northern Thailand. Located at the heart of Nan, it stands out for its Greek cross floor plan, its Nagas that appear to support the building, and its 19th-century mural paintings, considered rare testimony to daily life in the kingdom of Nan.

Why visit Wat Phumin

Three reasons make Wat Phumin a major stop during a stay in Nan:

  • Rare architecture in Thailand, blending Tai Lü and Lanna styles, with a unique building combining the functions of viharn and ubosot.
  • Frescoes signed by Tit Buaphan, a Tai Lue artist, documenting Nan society in the 19th century.
  • The famous fresco known as "Whispering of Love", which has become the visual emblem of the province.

The temple was designated a National Historic Site in 2008, in recognition of its heritage value.

History of the temple

According to Nan chronicles, the sanctuary was originally named Wat Phrom Min before being renamed Wat Phumin. Its construction dates to around 1776, during the reign of Chetabut Phrom Min.

Between 1867 and 1875, under the reign of Chao Ananta Vora Ritthi Det, the site underwent major restoration work. It was during this period that the mural paintings now famous throughout the region were created. These frescoes were contemporary with a pivotal moment for the kingdom of Nan, as it was being incorporated into Siam and forced to cede certain territories to the French.

What to see

Tai Lü architecture with a Greek cross floor plan

The main building rests on two giant carved Nagas, which appear to support the temple along its entire length. Four entrances oriented toward the cardinal points each open onto a Buddha statue placed at the center, facing away from each other. This arrangement, uncommon in Thailand, gives visitors an immediate reading of the space.

Small windows and the soberness of the volumes signal Tai Lü influence, while ornate wooden doors with floral motifs refer to the Lanna repertoire. The roof rises on three levels, its Naga finials marking the extremities, and an ornamental spiral umbrella crowns the whole structure.

The mural paintings of Tit Buaphan

The interior frescoes are attributed to Tai Lue artist Tit Buaphan. They cover a wide range: Buddhist legends, royal court scenes, traditional rituals, as well as daily life in 19th-century Nan—tobacco cultivation, field work, wedding parades, costumes and hairstyles of the era.

Some depictions address intimate or sensitive aspects with great frankness. Others slip in a discreet commentary on the perspective that Nan inhabitants held of the outside world at a time when their kingdom was being drawn into the Siamese realm.

"Poo Marn Yar Marn", the emblematic fresco

The temple's most famous painting depicts a tattooed man whispering in a woman's ear, his hand resting on her shoulder. Its local title, Poo Marn Yar Marn, is translated into English as Whispering of Love. Local residents also call it "Grandpa Man and Grandma Man".

Tradition holds that couples wishing to strengthen their bond, attract abundance or longevity come to pray and make wishes before this fresco.

The small museum and courtyard artists

A small museum attached to the temple displays local artifacts and traditional clothing. Outside, artists reproduce the frescoes while adding a contemporary touch; their paintings, postcards, t-shirts and key chains are sold on site.
