Ban Tham Pha Tong is a small rural village in Chiang Rai province, roughly fifteen kilometres from Chiang Rai city. Located on level ground, it primarily serves as a tranquil stopover for travellers keen to extend their stay in northern Thailand away from the urban centre, while remaining close to the international airport.

Why stop at Ban Tham Pha Tong

The village lacks major monuments, but it offers an authentic rural face of Chiang Rai province, where most visitors don't venture. You'll encounter the daily rhythms of an agricultural town: neighbourhood markets, small shops, artisan workshops, rice fields lining the roads. It's a straightforward window into local life, untouched by tourist staging.

Its geographical position is its main strength: a fifteen-minute drive from Chiang Rai city and its airport, the village makes an excellent base from which to explore the north's major sites (white temples, border mountains, tea plantations) without lodging in the heart of town.

Crafts and village life

Chiang Rai province has a long tradition of handicrafts, from weaving to ceramics to wood carving. Around Ban Tham Pha Tong, several family workshops continue working with locally-transmitted techniques. To delve deeper into this, the Doi Din Dang pottery workshop, nearby, is one of the region's key destinations.

Golf and nature

The flat, wooded terrain around the village has made it home to the Waterford Valley Golf Club & Resort, one of the region's recognised courses. Beyond golf, the village's surroundings are ideal for walking or cycling through fields and hamlets.

From Ban Tham Pha Tong, you can quickly reach several of Chiang Rai's iconic sites: Wat Phra Sing sanctuary, the golden clock tower in the Wiang district, the statue of King Mengrai, and the celebrated white temple Wat Rong Khun, some thirty kilometres to the south.

When to visit

The climate is tropical, marked by a rainy season from June to October, peaking in July, with temperatures exceeding 31 °C in August. The most pleasant period runs from November to February, when it's cool and dry, and remains pleasant from March to May even as temperatures climb. Note that in March–April, northern Thailand experiences a season of agricultural burning that temporarily degrades air quality.

How to get there

Chiang Rai International Airport (Mae Fah Luang) is located roughly 15 km away, a twenty to thirty-minute drive. It's the most straightforward option from Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

• Taxi or ride-sharing from the airport or Chiang Rai bus station: the quickest option.
• Rental car: recommended for freely exploring surrounding villages and sites.
• Songthaew or local bus from Chiang Rai: infrequent services; arrange in advance.
