Chiang Mai Night Safari
33, Tambon Nong Kwai, Amphoe Hang Dong, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50230, Thaïlande
A 130-hectare nocturnal zoo opened in 2006 just 12 km from Chiang Mai, Night Safari houses nearly 2,000 animals spread across three themed circuits.
The Chiang Mai Night Safari is a zoological park designed for nighttime wildlife observation. Opened in 2006 across 130 hectares on the edge of Doi Suthep National Park, it houses nearly 2,000 animals distributed across three themed circuits. It ranks among the world's largest night safaris, located roughly 12 km from downtown Chiang Mai.
Why Visit Chiang Mai Night Safari
The park distinguishes itself through its nocturnal formula: most observations occur after dusk, when nocturnal species become active. Visitors alternate between walking trails and themed trams to traverse environments recreating Asian jungle and African savanna. With 2,000 animals including 200 specimens sourced from Africa and Asia, zoological diversity remains one of the site's greatest strengths, combining observation, dining, and multimedia presentations all within the same park.
Park History
Chiang Mai Night Safari's origins trace back to an initiative by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, inspired by Singapore Night Safari which opened in 1994. The project aimed to provide Thailand with an equivalent attraction capable of drawing international tourism to the country's North. The selected location sits within the bounds of Doi Suthep National Park, beside the Rajapruek Royal Park.
Construction began in 2003 with a total budget of 32 million dollars. The park was officially inaugurated on February 6, 2006, spanning 130 hectares—double the size of the Singapore Night Safari that inspired it.
What to See
The park divides into three distinct zones, each with its own circuit and visitation style.
Jaguar Trail
A 1.2 km walking path around the swan lake. Over 400 animals are catalogued here: primates, white tigers, jaguars, leopards, tapirs and marsupials feature among visible species. An electric gyropod is available for visitors preferring to avoid walking.
Predator Prowl Zone
A 2.4 km tram circuit east of the lake, dedicated to predators. It houses 27 species, including bears, hyenas, African wild dogs, Canadian wolves, crocodiles, Bengal tigers and lions. Dangerous animals remain safely secured behind appropriate barriers throughout the journey.
Savanna Safari Zone
South of the lake, this 2.4 km tram route recreates African savanna ambiance. Herds of herbivores roam in semi-freedom: wildebeest, impalas, springboks, water buffalo, zebras, giraffes and gazelles. A few more unexpected species such as kangaroos and dingoes complete the collection.
Dining and Entertainment
The Giraffe Restaurant offers an on-site buffet experience. The park also features a fountain light and sound show as well as multimedia presentations, particularly appreciated by families.
Practical Information
The park operates in two timeframes: Jaguar Trail is accessible during daytime and evening hours, while the two tram circuits (Predator Prowl and Savanna Safari) are reserved for nighttime slots. Each zone has its own ticket, with reduced rates for children. Combination tickets allow you to experience all three circuits during the same evening.
Plan approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete all three zones: roughly 1 hour on foot for Jaguar Trail, then about 1 hour for each tram circuit. Bring insect repellent and wear covered clothing for the nighttime portion.
When to Visit
The park operates year-round. The high tourism season in Northern Thailand, spanning November through February, offers cooler, more comfortable evenings for visiting, plus extended operating hours. The rainy season (June to October) remains accessible, though it's best to check weather conditions on the day itself, as heavy showers can cut short outdoor presentations. For night circuits, plan to arrive before sunset to enjoy all tram passages.
